Certified Athletic Trainer

David L. Brunken, MA, ATC, has served as the Certified Athletic Trainer at Mt. San Jacinto College since 2000. He joined the Associate Faculty as a physical education instructor in Fall, 2001.

David earned his Master of Arts degree in physical education, exercise & sport science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1999. His research interests in sport-related concussion and mild head injury on neuromuscular control, postural stability and balance lead to his Master's thesis entitled, A Multiple Regression Analysis of Four Balance / Postural Stability Index Systems. He also worked as a research assistant in the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Brunken is a 1996 graduate of California State University, Long Beach where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, with cum laude honors, in kinesiology and physical education. A southern California native, David graduated from West Torrance High School in 1983.

A member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) since 1995, David teaches the Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries course, as well as jogging, weight training and body conditioning activities classes. He continues to work with our 10 men's and women's athletic teams on two campuses and is currently working toward implementing a comprehensive Student Athletic Trainer educational and clinical program.

David has presented topics, moderated lectures, and attended clinical research symposia in Baltimore, Kansas City, Nashville, Dallas, St. Louis, Indianapolis and Atlanta to keep up with current concepts, growing trends and medical advances in the areas of Athletic Training, Sports Medicine and athletic performance enhancement.

During the summer months, since 2001, David spends a few weeks with SoccerPlus Camps and President Tony DiCicco, providing sports medicine and athletic training services to 6-day goalkeeper school and field player academy soccer camps throughout the western United States. Prior to arriving at MSJC, David was the athletic trainer at his alma mater West Todave in actionrrance High School, Leuzinger High School in Lawndale, CA, an assistant Athletic trainer at El Camino College in Torrance, CA, and before moving inland was an athletic trainer with the West Coast Sports Medicine Foundation, the Los Angeles Rugby Club, and the Southern California Rugby Football Union. A broad spectrum of experiences have allowed him to work with professional, elite and United States National Team athletes, Olympic hopefuls, Olympic gold medalists and NCAA Division I and junior college national champions.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, David runs competitively in distance road races and is a veteran of over 30 marathons and 40 half-marathons including 2 Boston Marathon appearances. David resides in Moreno Valley with his wife of nine years and their two daughters; Audrey Elizabeth and Natalie Katharine. David's wife Jill is a Registered Nurse.
