The MSJC volleyball team won a thrilling match on Wednesday night as they defeated San Diego Mesa in five sets and set the program record for wins with their 20th of the year.

The Lady Eagles who are fresh off a second place finish in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference North Division played their final regular season home match of the year and avenged an earlier loss this season to PCAC South Champion San Diego Mesa 3-2. The match was tight from the start as MSJC was able to wrestle away the first set 26-24. The second set was also highly competitive as the Lady Eagles seized a 2-0 lead with a 25-23 win. Mesa was able to snare the third set 20-25 and then take a victory in the fourth 26-28 to force a fifth and deciding set. MSJC came out strong and gained control of the fifth as they went on to win 15-7 to clinch the match.

Lauryn Patterson had a team high 21 kills in the win while teammate Ruby Ruiz knocked down 16. Lannie Maffucci and Ariana Velasquez combined for 61 assists with Maffucci dishing out 33 and Velasquez had 28. Cynthia Arango picked up 24 digs on defense and Ruiz and Cashlee Hullar had 2 solo blocks a piece.

The win improved MSJC to 20-4 on the season. The 20 wins sets a program record for victories eclipsing a 19 win season in 2008. The Lady Eagles have one match remaining on their regular season schedule which will take place next Wednesday November 14th when they travel to San Diego City.

The play-off pairings for the CCCAA Regional will be announced next weekend.
