Baseball Team Finishes Season With 8th Win in 10 Games

The MSJC baseball team concluded a strong season last week with a 11-7 win over Cerro Coso to close the year with an 8-2 record.

The MSJC baseball team wrapped up a quick, but successful season last week as they defeated visiting Cerro Coso on Wednesday 11-7 to finish the season with an 8-2 record.

The game got off to a fast start as Cerro Coso drew first blood with a run in the top of the first inning, but the Eagles immediately responded scoring 5 runs of their own in the bottom half.  Ricky Nunez drove in MSJC's first run of the day with a single up the middle to score Jaden Jones, Patrick McDonald Jr. would add a two run single later in the inning while Russell Mitchell and Jones both also earned RBIs in the frame.  Cerro Coso took command of the middle part of the game as they scored 3 in the third and 3 in the sixth while keeping MSJC off the board to take a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the 7th.  In the home half of the 7th MSJC got an unearned run followed by a two run triple by Jones to go back on top 8-7.  In the bottom of the 8th the Eagles added 3 more runs as Ryan Grinnals drove in a run with a single to right and Jones continued his hot day with a RBI single to left, MSJC tacked on one more on a wild pitch.

Alex Banuelos earned the pitching victory in relief for the Eagles as he pitched the final 3 innings of the game allowing no runs on no hits while striking out 3.  Andrew Rivero started the game and went 5 innings giving up just a pair of earned runs while Max Rangel threw the sixth.

Jones finished his day 3 for 5 at the plate with two triples and 4 RBIs while Grinnals also had 3 hits in the victory.

The Eagles ended the season with some impressive offensive numbers on the year led by Nunez and Aaron Harper.  Harper finished the year with a sparkling batting average of .460, he had one homer and 15 RBIs.  Nunez had a team high 19 RBIs in ten games while blasting 5 homeruns and batting .426.  McDonald Jr. also was an impressive run producer for the Eagles as he also drove in 15 runs during the abbreviated season.  Jones and Simon Rangel had on base percentages of over 500 with Rangel posting a team best .577 OBP.  In all the Eagles outscored their opponents on the year 130-72, an offensive average of a whopping 13 runs a game.  Banuelos ended the year with a team high 3 pitching victories as he also posted a team best 2.29 ERA.  McDonald Jr. was credited with 2 wins for MSJC while Mitchell, Jacob Covington, and Max Rangel all had one win a piece for the year.
