Eagles Roll Past Southwestern

The MSJC football team went on the road Saturday night and earned an easy 45-3 win at Southwestern.

The Eagles got things started right away as they took the opening kickoff down the field and put points on the board with a 38-yard field goal by Jared Kuchcinski. MSJC would extend the lead to 10-0 on the opening drive of the second quarter when Logan Gonzalez connected with Koa Apana on 5-yard TD strike. MSJC seized full control of the contest when Vincent Perryman blocked a Southwestern punt with 8:31 to play in the half and recovered it at the Jaguars 1 yard line. Daniel Mendoza scored on the next play to give the Eagles a 17-0 lead. Jamarcus Clemons added a 6-yard touchdown run just before halftime to give MSJC a 24-3 halftime lead.

The Eagles would tack on three more touchdowns while shutting out Southwestern in the second half. Gonzalez and Apana hooked up for their second touchdown of the game midway through the third quarter on a 12-yard pass. In the fourth quarter Alrex Vega and Clemons would each score on 10-yard runs to round out the day's scoring.

Gonzalez finished his night completing 29 of 32 passes for 290 yards. Apana made a game high seven receptions for seventy-eight yards while Christian Kretz and Jackson Weng both had four catches. Darius Johnson led a balanced ground attack with nine carries for fifty-two yards.

The Eagle defense allowed just 118 total yards in the game and made nine tackles for loss in the victory. DeShawn Brooks had a team high six tackles while Lakion Fowler had five. Tyson Roberts added his second interception of the season.

The win moves the Eagles overall season record to 4-2, they are 2-1 in National Southern League games. MSJC will host San Diego Mesa on Saturday at HCN Bank Stadium in Menifee. Kick-off on Saturday is set for 6 pm.
