The MSJC football team went on the road Saturday and got off to a fast start on their way to a 40-21 win over Grossmont.
The Eagles scored on their opening offensive drive of the game when Alrex Vega scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 12:35 to play in the first quarter to give them a 7-0 lead. On Grossmont's ensuing drive MSJC blocked a punt that was recovered in the end zone by Bryce Terhue and just over five minutes into the contest the Eagles led 14-0.
MSJC would continue to build their lead on their first drive of the second period when Logan Gonzalez found Jackson Weng on a 13-yard TD pass. Later in the second Vega capped off a 13 play 80-yard drive with his second touchdown of the day from 3 yards out and the Eagles held a commanding 28-3 lead. The Eagle defense struck again on Grossmont's next possession when Lakion Fowler sacked the quarterback and stripped the ball loose, Vincent Perryman was there for the scoop and score from the 11-yard line and MSJC pushed their lead all the way out to 34-3. The teams went to the locker room with the Eagle holding a 34-9 lead. MSJC's final score of the game came early in the fourth quarter when Gonzalez hit Christian Kretz with an 11-yard scoring strike.
Gonzalez finished his afternoon completing 22 of 32 passes for 273 yards. Weng had a game high 91 yards receiving on five receptions. Emilio Valencia made 6 catches for 74 yards and Kretz ended the contest with 4 grabs for 45 yards. Fowler had 4 total tackles and 2 sacks while Perryman also made a sack.
The Eagles improved to 6-3 overall on the season and are now 4-2 in National Southern League action. MSJC will play their final regular season game of the year on Saturday when they travel to Saddleback for a 6 pm contest.
