The MSJC softball team opened the season with three straight wins over the past week and a half. The Eagles defeated Long Beach City on the road and swept LA Harbor at home.
MSJC began their year at Long Beach City and fell behind after the first inning 1-0 but would answer with five runs over the next two innings to lead 5-1 after three. Starting pitcher Trinity Robinson shut out the Vikings the rest of the way and the Eagles won their opener 5-1. Brooke Schaffer had two hits and drove home two runs to lead the offense. Natalie Juarez and Laila Andrade both had an RBI each. Robinson finished the game throwing 7 innings allowing just the one run while giving up 5 hits.
Saturday the Eagles hosted LA Harbor in a doubleheader in Menifee and won the first game of the day 4-0. Robinson was dominate in the circle as she threw the complete game shutout allowing just 3 hits while striking out nine. Bailey Heuer had a double and an RBI, while Schaffer added a triple and drove one home to lead the offense. Andrade and Madison Morris also picked up an RBI for MSJC in the win. Trinity Barnes and Trista Clarke both had two hits.
The Eagles made an impressive comeback in game two on Saturday after falling behind 4-1 after 3 innings. MSJC scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings. The highlight of the sixth was a double by Heuer to cut the lead to 4-3, and then in the seventh Clarke ripped a double down the left field line to tie the game and send it to the eighth. Both teams scored a run in the 8th to make it 5-5 and then after a scoreless ninth Juarez hit an infield single to score Barnes with the winning run in the bottom of the tenth for MSJC. Robinson once again earned the pitching victory this time in relief as she went 4 innings allowing one unearned run and picking up 4 strikeouts. Ellianna Pasley was the starter for the Eagles, she threw 5 innings allowing 4 unearned runs, and Mia Quiroz threw one scoreless inning in relief.
The 3-0 Eagles will be back in action twice this week as they travel to Saddleback on Monday and Palomar on Thursday. Both games this week are scheduled to begin at 2 pm.
