Women's Basketball Opens Season With Pair of Road Wins

The MSJC women's basketball team opened the season Wednesday and Thursday with a pair of wins on the road over Taft and Porterville.

In the season opener the Eagles shook off a slow start to win at Taft 90-33.  Four MSJC players scored in double figures and all 10 of the Eagles that played in the game scored at least 2 points.  Mariah Sanchez was the game's top scorer as she had 18 points on six three point field goals.  Deja Blue and Sandee Heiermann controlled the game from the guard positions for MSJC as they each had 13 points, with Blue pulling down a game high 12 rebounds and passing out 6 assists, while Heiermann finished with 9 boards and 7 assists.  Alexis Pina and Alaysia Kidwell just missed recording double doubles in their first college game as Pina finished with 9 points and 11 rebounds while Kidwell had 11 boards to go along with 8 points. Rayven Crook also reached double figures in scoring with 13.  MSJC dominated the glass in the game as they out rebounded Taft 76-30 on the night.  

On Thursday the Eagles started a little faster at Porterville as they jumped ahead 16-5 after the opening quarter and 36-13 at halftime on their way to a 69-31 win.  Blue once again was solid as she scored a game high 16 points while grabbing 10 rebounds and making 6 assists.  This time Pina was able to get her double double as she scored 12 and grabbed 10 boards.  Crook added 11 points in the win and Sanchez also hit double figures for the second straight game with 10.  

The Eagles 2-0 on the season will be at home this week when they host the San Jacinto Lion's Club Tip-Off Classic.  Thursday MSJC will take on Antelope Valley at 5 pm and Friday the Eagles play Palomar College at 1 pm.  Each day there will be a game prior to the MSJC contest as Thursday Chaffey and Palomar will play at 3 pm and Friday at 11 am Chaffey will take on Antelope Valley.
